Bioluminescence or Phosphorescence in the Water.
Question
What causes the glow that I see sometimes in the summer while paddling in our estuary salt water or out in our river mouth reef breaker's at night. I read that it was plankton from a red tide.
Answer
Planktonic dinoflagellates as well as bacteria are common and abundant producers of the biological green glow in the coastal waves or wake of your boat.
“Bioluminescence” is represented commonly in animal and plant groups and the light derives from living (bio) light (luminescence) and is biologically produced from light-emitting molecules,(luciferin) when they mix with luciferase enzymes and oxygen.
One of my best experiences:
Russian River Mouth: Persieds Meteor Shower: 1998
11PM: Arrived in Jenner after work. Parked at river mouth overlook. Enjoying drummers on the beach below. To late to drag out kayak in the dark so I just sat in the dark. And the show began.
I could see the rippling lights in the ocean waves then...
The sky started dropping stars, raining straight down from the hights of the skys which seemed to melt in the last eighth of the skyline from the sea.
Directly Melding Into...
The undulating bioluminescent dance that was playing simutainiously in the dancing waves of the sea.
How do I describe the experience of seeing the Perciedes Meteror Shower rain of light from the sky above, the Bioluminescence dance on the waters of the river estuary, and illumination of my families secret reef fishing grounds simutaniously.
My joy was seeing the bioluminescence dancing on it's secret waves while being rained on by the meteor shower.
